“Mindfulness” is crucial for entrepreneurs during economic slowdown.

This finding is documented in the research by an ICO NIDA faculty, Assistant Professor Dr. Peerayuth Charoensukmongkol, published in the Organization Management Journal (SCImago/Scopus indexed).

His study showed that entrepreneurs who exhibit a higher level of mindfulness demonstrate a higher degree of improvisational behavior, represented by their ability to perform well under pressure, develop creative resource

deployment, and demonstrate perseverance despite the perceived difficulties they encounter. The findings also reveal that the entrepreneurs who exhibited a higher degree of improvisational behavior achieved higher business performance and had lower stress

Given the difficulties that businesses inevitably face during the economic slowdown, it is crucial for entrepreneurs to exhibit these characteristics that can enhance their ability to make strategic executions quickly in response to unforeseen opportunities and threats that increase their firms’ chances of survival and maintain satisfactory performance in the pressure-filled business environment.

Purpose This study aims to examine the contribution of cultural intelligence (CQ) to the level of adaptive selling behavior and customer-oriented selling behavior of salespeople in a cross-cultural selling context. Design/methodology/approach This study collected data from a total of 210 Thai salespeople who had been assigned to work at trade shows in Japan ( n = 110) and in Vietnam ( n = 100). Findings The findings show that salespeople with higher CQ tend to demonstrate a higher degree of adaptive selling behavior and customer-oriented selling behavior in both countries. The moderating effect analysis shows that the positive relationship between CQ and adaptive selling behavior is significantly higher for Thai salespeople in Japanese trade shows than in Vietnamese trade shows. Research limitations/implications This study uses cross-sectional data collection; therefore, the results have been interpreted as associations, but not causations. Practical implications The study suggests that CQ development programs could be considered as part of the training that organizations provide to salespeople to develop cross-cultural competencies to deal effectively with foreign customers. Originality/value This study provides additional evidence concerning the benefits of CQ in an occupational area that has not been previously explored. More importantly, the result regarding the positive linkage between CQ and adaptive selling behavior was significantly stronger in the country characterized by higher cultural differences. This also contributed to CQ research by showing that differences in a cultural context might also influence the benefits of CQ in relation to the outcome variables.

27.Dr. Peerayuth ด้านในWhy many Thai entrepreneurs are superstitious?

The theories in psychology suggested that superstitious behaviors tend to be particularly relevant for individuals who are facing with stressful and uncertain situations. Business entrepreneurs, especially those who recently faced with business problems, seem to fit this theoretical perspective because they had to endure a significant loss from their investment. This phenomenon is supported by the study of ICO NIDA faculty, Asst. Prof. Dr. Peerayuth Charoensukmongkol, which was recently published in BU Academic Review. His research collected survey data from a sample of Thai entrepreneurs who recently closed down their businesses in less than one month. The results show that entrepreneurs who demonstrate a high degree of superstitious behaviors not only exhibit low internal locus of control but also high external locus of control. His analysis further showed that for entrepreneurs with strong external locus of control who believe that outcomes in life are largely determined by external factors, the degree of superstitious behaviors tends to be more prominent.

His research recommends that although engaging in superstitious behaviors may help some entrepreneurs with low internal locus of control buffer negative feelings and create peace of mind during the stressful period, it may not fundamentally help them cope with problems when compared to those with high internal locus of control who have more confidence in their own self. Having self-confidence seems to be the quality of entrepreneurs that precludes them from relying on the power of superstitions, to which its causal link to the expected outcome is inherently vague. Therefore, it is crucial for entrepreneurs to develop the sense of efficacy so that they can deal with any difficulty that may happen in business.

The research by Dr. Peerayuth Charoensukmongkol (a faculty of ICO NIDA) coauthored with Dr. Pronprom Suthatorn (a former PhD student of ICO NIDA) found that Mindfulness could help salesperson to increase optimism, resilience, and self-efficacy, thereby helping them to lower emotional exhaustion in their career.

Direct selling is a highly stressful job that generally causes emotional exhaustion to people in this career.

This research suggested that organizations should consider mindfulness training as an intervention that may allow their salespersons to avoid emotional exhaustion.

This study is the first of its kind to examine the acceptance and usage behavior of online grocery shopping in Thailand. It proposes an extension of the technology acceptance model, including subjective norm, visibility, perceived risk, and perceived enjoyment to better understand the factors and the extent to which they lead to the acceptance or rejection of online grocery shopping. In order to accurately test the variables and the relationships of the proposed research model, a questionnaire was developed and distributed to 450 residents in the Bangkok area, of which 263 valid responses were returned back to the researcher. Instrument development was done by using existing scales and items from the current literature on technology acceptance. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used for this research, with the results emphasizing that perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, intention to use, subjective norm, and perceived enjoyment have a statistically significant relationship towards the acceptance of online grocery shopping in Thailand. By contrast, visibility and perceived risk were found to have no significant impact on the perceived usefulness of online grocery shopping. The results and implications are summarized in the discussion part of this paper where valuable recommendations for decision makers are provided.

Did the recent stock plummet made you nervous? Did it make you commit wrong trading decisions and suffer financial losses in the end?

The good news is “mindfulness meditation” is a practice that may help stock traders achieve better trading performance. According to a recent study of ICO NIDA faculties, Asst. Prof. Dr. Peerayuth Charoensukmongkol and Assoc Prof. Dr. Vesarach Aumeboonsuke, they found that stock traders who practiced mindfulness meditation more intensively reported better trading performance than those who did not. Moreover, traders who practiced meditation tended to show a higher level of trading discipline and also reported a low frequency of panic selling and overreaction to news than those who did not meditate. In particular, these trading characteristics explain why traders who practiced meditation tended to have better trading performance. In the end, the authors suggested that mindfulness meditation should be taught to stock investors and traders in order to lower irrational behaviors that could unnecessarily lure them to commit unsuccessful trades.

This study investigated the relationship between the level of cultural intelligence exhibited by the airline cabin crew members and the degree of anxiety they experienced when serving foreign passengers. Intercultural communication competence and service attentiveness were proposed as two competencies that mediated the linkage between cultural intelligence and lower cabin crew anxiety. Survey data were collected from 372 Thai airline cabin crew members who worked at a leading international airline in Thailand. The results from a partial least squares regression analysis supported that intercultural communication competence and service attentiveness mediated the linkage between cultural intelligence and lower cabin crew anxiety.
