Our interdisciplinary curriculum fosters creativity, enabling students and alumni to make important contributions to their fields. Graduates from programs that focus on single disciplines often commit errors that can be better detected by people familiar with two or more disciplines. Many intellectual, social, and practical problems require interdisciplinary approaches but enjoy greater flexibility in their research. Interdisciplinarians may help to bridge communication gaps in modern academia, thereby mobilizing enormous intellectual resources for the causes of greater social rationality and justice. By bridging fragmented disciplines, interdisciplinarians might be able to play roles in defending academic freedom.
